New Zealand to consider moving Finn Allen to middle order
New Zealand coach Rob Walter suggests Finn Allen may be moved to the middle order for the upcoming ODI series against India.
The Brief
- New Zealand is considering moving Finn Allen to the middle order for the ODI series against India.
- Allen has not batted below the opening slots in List A cricket since 2020.
- Devon Conway is the likely opener with Seifert if Conway leaves for Tests.
New Zealand's head coach, Rob Walter, has confirmed the team is exploring the possibility of moving Finn Allen to the middle order for the upcoming five-match ODI series against India, starting on November 4.
Allen, who has been recalled for the 50-over series, last played in ODIs in late 2023. He has not batted anywhere below the opening slots in List A cricket since 2020.
Walter explained that the move aims to allow Allen to influence the game in crucial middle overs and score more runs. He noted that the role is slightly different in 50-over cricket compared to T20 matches.
Devon Conway is expected to open with Tim Seifert in the first three ODIs, with Nick Kelly potentially taking over if Conway is needed for the India Tests.
Walter mentioned the idea was discussed during the T20 World Cup, with Allen also having conversations with Auckland Aces coach Rob Nicol about adapting his role for the middle order.
He emphasized that the move is not reckless, as it reflects a shift in 50-over cricket where overs 25-40 are becoming more significant, especially on good surfaces.
