New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that President Donald Trump has agreed to grant a visa to the mother of Javits Frimpong, a 15-year-old Ghanaian immigrant who was shot and killed in the Bronx.
Frimpong was heading to school in a Bronx neighborhood shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Thursday when he was shot in the abdomen, according to the New York City Police.
He was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, which remains under investigation.
U.S. Rep. Ritchie Torres, D-N.Y., stated that Frimpong arrived in the Bronx from Ghana a year ago to stay with his father and begin a new life in the U.S.
Ghanaian Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said Ghanaian officials in New York are coordinating with local authorities and will cover the full cost of the mother’s travel and contribute to a dignifying funeral.
The foreign minister also welcomed Mamdani’s intervention and Trump’s decision to grant the visa, calling the mother’s pain 'unimaginable.'
