Democrats gained control of the House by winning more than two dozen Republican-held districts.
The Brief
- Democrats flipped over two dozen Republican-held seats in the 2026 midterms.
- Redistricting efforts by both parties influenced the outcomes in several key districts.
- Winners in many races have yet to be officially projected.
Democrats won control of the House of Representatives by flipping more than two dozen Republican-held seats in the 2026 midterm elections. The victories included both perennial swing districts and areas once considered strongly Republican.
The 2026 midterms were impacted by last year's nationwide redistricting efforts. Texas Republicans shifted several districts rightward at President Trump's request, while California Democrats moved districts leftward for partisan advantage. Other states also adjusted their maps for political benefit.
In Missouri's 2nd District, Democrat Fred Wellman defeated GOP Rep. Ann Wagner, who had won by 12 points in 2024. The new maps were invalidated in court, and the district was previously rated solid-red by the Cook Political Report.
In Indiana's 5th District, Democrat J.D. Ford unseated Republican Rep. Victoria Spartz, who had won by over 18 points in 2024. In Kentucky's 6th District, Democrat Zach Dembo defeated Republican Ralph Alvarado, a seat that had been GOP-held for over 30 years.
In Wisconsin's 1st District, Democrat Mitchell Berman defeated Rep. Bryan Steil, the first Democrat to represent the district in over three decades. In Nevada's 2nd District, Democrat Teresa Benitez-Thompson became the first Democrat to represent Northern Nevada in decades.
Democrats also won several rematch races. In Pennsylvania's 10th District, Democrat Janelle Stelson beat GOP Rep. Scott Perry. In Virginia's 2nd District, former Rep. Elaine Luria defeated Rep. Jen Kiggans, marking the fourth time the district has flipped parties since 2008.
In the Northeast, Democrats secured competitive districts. In New Jersey's 7th District, Democrat Rebecca Bennett defeated Rep. Tom Kean Jr., who had been absent from Congress due to a hospital stay. In Pennsylvania's 1st District, Democrat Bob Harvie unseated Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, a moderate who had defied calls to end his campaign amid allegations of domestic abuse.
