The Brief

  • Deb Haaland elected governor of New Mexico, first Native American woman to lead a U.S. state.
  • Peggy Flanagan becomes first Native American woman senator, elected from Minnesota.
  • Both candidates won as Democrats swept key races in the 2026 midterm elections.

Deb Haaland, a citizen of Laguna Pueblo, was elected governor of New Mexico, marking the first time a Native American woman has led a U.S. state. She defeated Republican Gregg Hull in the race.

Peggy Flanagan, an enrolled member of White Earth Nation, was elected senator from Minnesota, becoming the first Native American woman to hold that position. She defeated Republican Michele Tafoya.

Haaland previously served as the first Native American Cabinet secretary under President Joe Biden, from 2021 to 2025. She also became the first Native American woman to chair a state political party in 2015.

Flanagan began her career as an organizer, later serving on the Minneapolis School Board and leading the Children's Defense Fund Minnesota. She has held the position of lieutenant governor since 2019.

Haaland ran on issues including the cost of living, child care, and child welfare, while also criticizing former President Trump for cuts to federal safety net programs. She pledged to pause new data center construction until legislative guardrails are passed.

Flanagan focused on her personal story, emphasizing the importance of Medicaid and advocating for 'Medicare for All' and national paid family leave. She celebrated the election win in St. Paul, where tribal leaders performed a victory song.
