Cruz Calls Midterm Loss 'Watergate-level Repudiation'
Senator warns Republicans must address economic concerns to regain voter trust.
The Brief
- Cruz labeled the midterm results a 'Watergate-level repudiation' of Republican performance.
- He cited high costs for essentials and criticized GOP economic policies.
- Cruz pledged to work with Democrats but insisted Texas will remain Republican.
Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas, described the Democratic sweep in the midterm elections as a 'Watergate-level repudiation' of Republican performance, calling it an 'ass-kicking' for the party.
Cruz, who is not up for re-election until 2030, acknowledged that voters were 'pissed off' due to Republicans' failure to address rising costs of essentials such as food, gas, and insurance.
He pointed to tariffs and the prolonged Iran war as factors contributing to economic hardship, stating that 'food is too high, gas is too, diesel is too high, insurance is too high, life is too high.'
Cruz said he congratulated Democratic Sen.-elect James Talarico on his victory and expressed willingness to work with Democrats when they are 'reasonable,' though he emphasized that Texas will remain a Republican state.
He rejected the idea that Texas has become 'tofu-eating, gun-banning, tutu-wearing pinko commie liberals,' asserting that the state remains 'true blue-collar' and will rebuild as a free-market conservative state.
In an op-ed, Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, also acknowledged Republican shortcomings on the economy, noting that voters trusted Trump and Republicans over Democrats to protect their interests.
