The Brief

  • Netanyahu called Mamdani 'antisemitic mayor of New York' for criticizing Israel's Gaza actions.
  • Mamdani criticized Netanyahu's actions in Gaza and called him a 'war criminal'.
  • Protesters arrested near UN during Netanyahu's speech, including celebrities.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani of endangering Jewish residents by spreading false information about Israel's military operations in Gaza during a speech at the United Nations.

Netanyahu referred to Mamdani as 'the antisemitic mayor of New York,' claiming the mayor's criticism has made many Jews feel unsafe in the city.

Mamdani, who has been a vocal critic of Israel's actions in Gaza, has repeatedly denied that his advocacy for Palestinian rights constitutes antisemitism.

Mamdani met with former U.S. President Donald Trump in New York, and Netanyahu praised Trump for his support of Israel during his speech.

In a statement, Mamdani reiterated his criticism of Israel's actions in Gaza, where over 73,000 people have been killed since the war began in retaliation for Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023.

Mamdani also mentioned that Netanyahu faces an International Criminal Court arrest warrant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity, though he acknowledged New York lacks authority to detain the prime minister.
