Thai Teen Wins America’s Got Talent

Nene Royal, a 16-year-old Thai rock singer and guitarist, won the US television talent show America’s Got Talent on September 24. The victory earned her a prize of US$1 million and brought widespread celebration in Thailand.

Royal, whose real name is Rattikarn Amloy, performed with Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and the band Linkin Park during the competition. Her performance included guitar solos and rock ballads that impressed judges and viewers.

Her school principal, Gareth Eynon, described the moment of her victory as 'electric,' noting that students and teachers at Kajonkiet International School in Phuket gathered to watch her final performance.

Eyn, the school principal, praised Royal’s humility and talent, saying she was just as happy helping less experienced musicians as she was performing. He called her a 'remarkable role model' for younger students.

Royal, who began playing guitar at age seven, collapsed to the stage floor in California when her win was announced. She credited her success to online tutorials and a music scholarship to her private school.

Her victory has been celebrated across Thailand, with her hometown night market calling her an inspiration. Prime Minister Anutin congratulated her, calling her achievement a source of pride for Thai people.
