Malaysia and Indonesia have formed a joint Halal Council to strengthen bilateral trade relations, according to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
The council will be led by Indonesia's Halal Product Assurance Organising Agency (BPJPH), with Malaysia acting as secretary-general. The first meeting is planned for October 2026.
The initiative aims to streamline halal certification processes between the two nations, reducing trade barriers and facilitating smoother business operations.
The collaboration builds on existing bilateral agreements, including a 2023 memorandum of cooperation and completed negotiations on halal certification and trade in June 2026.
Malaysia brings expertise in standards, governance, Islamic finance, and trade facilitation, while Indonesia contributes scale, production capacity, and entrepreneurial strengths.
The council is expected to help small manufacturers access overseas markets and support halal-certified companies in fulfilling their first export orders.
