Nepal PM Thanks India, China for Aid; Proposes Himalayan Climate Mechanism

Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah addressed the 81st United Nations General Assembly, expressing gratitude to countries and organizations that provided aid following the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli disaster.

Shah emphasized that the disaster was not only a local tragedy but a global warning about climate change, urging the international community to take it seriously.

He specifically acknowledged the assistance from India and China, as well as support from the United Nations, humanitarian agencies, and other global partners.

Shah called for greater responsibility from nations with historical contributions to climate change and greater capacity to respond, citing the principle of common, differentiated responsibility and respective capabilities.

He stressed the critical role of the Hindu Kush-Himalaya region, which supports nearly two billion people through water, ecosystems, agriculture, and livelihoods.

Shah proposed the creation of a Himalayan climate resilience mechanism led by Nepal, India, and China, focusing on satellite data sharing, glacial lake monitoring, and early warning systems.

He also noted Nepal's environmental progress, stating that the country has restored forests covering nearly half its territory.
