The Brief

  • Australia's bowlers, including Cummins, Lyon, Hazlewood, and Starc, reached 600 Test wickets together.
  • Steve Smith took three catches, including a one-handed dismissal of Kyle Verreynne.
  • South Africa's batting struggled, with a collapse of 3-15 before lunch.

On the third day of the Test in Durban, Australia's bowlers and fielders restricted South Africa to 237 in the first innings. The hosts were left on the back foot after a strong performance from the visitors.

Pat Cummins led the bowling attack with 3-54, joining Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc as the first quartet in history to reach 600 wickets in Tests played together.

Steve Smith, the Australian captain, was instrumental with the gloves, taking three crucial catches. His first dismissal of South Africa's captain Temba Bavuma came after a collapse of 3-15 before lunch.

Smith's second catch, a one-handed grab of Kyle Verreynne, was particularly impressive. He anticipated the shot and moved before Verreynne struck the ball, then caught it with his right hand.

In between those dismissals, Smith also took a catch at second slip off Cummins, preventing a boundary that would have likely gone to Matt Renshaw at first slip.

South Africa's batting was lackluster, with Wiaan Mulder and Tristan Stubbs failing to stabilize the innings. The Proteas lost 3-15 in 10 overs after a promising start of 1-84.

Australia's experience and control over the game were evident, as the quicks adjusted their lengths and capitalized on South Africa's errors to maintain their dominance.
