World Bank Allocates $500M for Land Restoration in Northern Nigeria
Additional funding aims to improve water management and support rural livelihoods.
The Brief
- World Bank approves $500 million for ACReSAL Project in northern Nigeria.
- Funding targets 1.4 million hectares and 6.6 million people by 2031.
- Project focuses on restoring land, improving water security, and reducing climate risks.
The World Bank has approved an additional $500 million for Nigeria's Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project, which aims to restore degraded land, enhance water management, and protect communities from climate risks.
The funding will expand efforts to rehabilitate landscapes, improve agricultural productivity, and support rural families reliant on healthy soil and water resources in northern Nigeria.
By 2031, the program is expected to cover 1.4 million hectares and benefit 6.6 million people through improved landscape management and climate adaptation strategies.
Planned activities include restoring watersheds, controlling erosion, reducing flood risks, and promoting sustainable farming practices to protect natural resources.
Since its launch in 2022, the ACReSAL Project has already helped manage natural resources sustainably across 550,000 hectares and reached over 4.4 million beneficiaries.
The project has exceeded its original catchment management targets, providing a foundation for expanding restoration efforts and strengthening environmental protection.
