The Brief

  • Militants linked to Islamic State killed 33 civilians in Cantine-Aloya.
  • Health post and several homes were set on fire during the attack.
  • Local officials reported 33 bodies recovered from the scene.

Islamic State-linked militants killed at least 33 civilians during a raid on Cantine-Aloya, a village in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, according to authorities.

The attack occurred around 11 pm on Thursday, approximately 50 km west of Beni in North Kivu province. Officials stated that the militants set fire to a health post and torched multiple houses.

Christian Kakule Vulembera, head doctor at a nearby hospital, reported that one confirmed Ebola patient and five suspected cases fled during the attack. Three of the suspected cases were identified as high-risk contacts.

Colonel Charles Omeonga, the Beni territorial administrator, attributed the attack to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), which Islamic State recognises as an affiliate. He noted that heavy rain had hindered military operations and investigations, making it difficult to determine the full death toll.

Local civil society leader Tchetche Aliamini said rescuers recovered 33 bodies. Most victims were killed by gunshots, while others were burned or hacked with machetes.
