The Brief

  • Deshaun Watson placed in concussion protocol after reporting symptoms Monday night.
  • Shedeur Sanders may start Sunday's game against the Saints if Watson is unavailable.
  • Watson was hit helmet-to-helmet during Sunday's game and cleared to return.

Deshaun Watson was placed in the concussion protocol after experiencing symptoms on Monday night, according to the Browns medical staff. Watson reported his symptoms to the team on Tuesday morning and was immediately placed in the protocol.

Watson left the game during Sunday's 27-6 loss to the Steelers after a helmet-to-helmet hit by safety Jaquan Brisker. He was checked in the medical tent and cleared to return before the Browns' next offensive series.

The Browns said they followed the NFL concussion protocol during and after the game, including an independent neurotrauma consultant's evaluation. Watson was cleared by the consultant and returned to the field.

If Watson passes all concussion tests by Saturday, he could still play against the Saints. However, his availability is subject to the protocol. Shedeur Sanders may start Sunday's game if Watson is unable to play.

Sanders, the Browns' fifth-round pick, has started the final seven games of the past season and led the team to a 20-18 victory over the Bengals in January. This would be his first start since then.

Brisker, who was flagged for roughing the passer after the hit, criticized Watson's reaction to the hit. Brisker said Watson was 'babying the quarterback' and appeared to be 'crying' on the field.
