UPMC Doctor Dies in Home Stabbing, Wife Injured

A UPMC doctor and his wife were found stabbed in their home in Edgewood on Thursday morning. Both were taken to a hospital, where the doctor later died.

According to police, 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway entered the home and stabbed the couple multiple times while they were asleep. The attack occurred shortly after 12:30 a.m. on Linden Avenue.

Evans' wife reported the incident to police after escaping the home. She told authorities she woke up to an attack by Hemingway, who was wearing only underwear. She recalled her husband addressing the attacker as 'Elijah,' but it is unclear if they knew each other.

Hemingway was detained by officers and is now facing charges including homicide, aggravated assault, burglary, and criminal trespass. He claimed Evans invited him to their home hours before the attack, but authorities say he could not provide supporting details.

A neighbor reported that police found Hemingway hiding in her backyard. He was described as bleeding and incapacitated when located. The neighbor expressed shock at the incident occurring on a typically quiet street.

Authorities urged residents to take precautions, such as locking doors, securing vehicles, and being aware of their surroundings. A UPMC spokesperson expressed condolences for the loss of Dr. Evans, describing him as a dedicated caregiver and valued member of the hospital and university communities.
