Trump Hosts Lavish Welcome for Xi Jinping Despite Past Criticisms

President Donald Trump hosted Chinese leader Xi Jinping with a series of elaborate gestures, including two red, carpets and a state dinner, despite Trump’s previous accusations that China interfered in U.S. elections and exploited the country through trade.

The first red carpet was laid as Xi and his wife arrived at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, on Wednesday, and a second was placed at the White House on Thursday. Trump also presented Xi with a statue of a bald eagle as a gift.

At the state dinner, Trump praised Xi for fostering ties between the two nations, stating, 'we’ve never gotten along better since the first trade ships from New York left the harbor to arrive on the banks of the Pearl River.'

Xi responded with a cordial tone, expressing a 'personal rapport' with Trump and announcing that China would soon send two giant pandas to the Atlanta zoo. The announcement was seen as a gesture to appeal to American children and wildlife enthusiasts.

Despite the warm reception, some members of Trump’s own party expressed concern. Senator Roger Wicker criticized the lavish welcome, suggesting that inviting Xi to the U.S. was inappropriate given the ongoing tensions between the two nations.

The summit, which focused on trade, the Iran war, and artificial intelligence, did not yield significant breakthroughs. Experts noted that Trump entered the meeting in a weakened position, facing challenges from the ongoing conflict with Iran and the looming midterm elections.

While some areas of cooperation, such as a potential AI hotline, were discussed, the broader geopolitical tensions remained unresolved. Trump’s weakened position and Xi’s control over critical resources like rare earth materials further complicated the negotiations.
