- Opposition filed a petition against the Election Commission of India and alleged electoral misconduct at the Supreme Court.
Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has invited members of the INDIA bloc, along with civil society and student organization representatives, for a meeting at his residence on Tuesday, according to sources.
The gathering is expected to involve discussions on a potential joint protest strategy regarding the 'vote chori' allegations and calls for the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar.
The meeting follows the Opposition's recent protests on the issue, which reached the Supreme Court the previous day. Opposition leaders, activists, and civil society members marched in central Delhi and submitted a joint petition against the Election Commission of India and alleged electoral misconduct.
Participants in the protest included Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Akhilesh Yadav, Mamata Banerjee, D Raja, M A Baby, Tejashwi Yadav, and Supriya Sule. Protesters attempted to breach barricades but were halted at a second point on Bhagwan Dass Road.
Senior INDIA bloc leaders later filed their petition at the Supreme Court, making the Election Commission of India, the Chief Election Commissioner, and two Election Commissioners parties in the case.
The developments came after the Chief Justice of India rejected a request to meet the Leaders of Opposition, stating the matter was sub judice. Gandhi's call for a meeting signals the Opposition's next steps on the 'vote chori' issue.
