Pope Leo XIV has announced he will undergo surgery to remove a lung nodule detected during recent medical checks. The procedure is scheduled for the coming days, with an expected recovery period of approximately a week.

The nodule, described as small and localized, was found during routine medical evaluations. Officials said the nodule was detected at an early stage and is considered circumscribed, meaning it is well-contained.

The pope made the announcement during his Sunday noon blessing, thanking the crowd for their support and entrusting himself to their prayers. He also expressed his intention to proceed with his planned trip to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru in late November.

According to the American Cancer Society, a lung nodule is a small abnormal area measuring less than 3cm, often detected during CT scans for other conditions such as trauma or infection. Pope Leo has no previously known health issues and is considered physically active.

The surgery will take place at Rome’s Gemelli hospital, where Pope Francis and previous popes were treated. The hospital also has a special apartment for pontiffs. The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, expressed support for Pope Leo, noting his calm and reassuring response to the situation.

Pope Francis, Leo’s predecessor, died in April 2025 from a stroke following a prolonged hospitalization due to a respiratory crisis and double pneumonia. Francis had a history of chronic lung disease and had part of one lung removed in his youth.
