Poland arrests man in plot to kill PM Tusk
Poland detains suspect linked to potential assassination attempt on PM and defense minister.
The Brief
- Man accused of plotting to kill PM Donald Tusk and defense minister detained.
- Security services held emergency meeting after tip about possible attack.
- Poland faces ongoing threats from recent school knife attacks and hybrid Russian attacks.
Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed the detention of a man accused of plotting to assassinate him and the country's defense minister, following an emergency meeting with security officials.
The Interior Minister also confirmed the arrest, though no details about the suspect's identity were released. The arrest came after police received a tip about a potential attack.
The country remains on high alert following a series of violent knife attacks at schools this week, which have left at least one person dead and injured many others, including children.
Three separate attacks occurred in the central Maz, with suspects ranging in age from 15 to 21. The first incident involved a 19-year-old student who injured nine people at a vocational school.
Tusk described the attacks as 'spontaneous actions' fueled by online glorification of violence, rather than organized groups or specific political ideologies. He acknowledged some suspects are linked to the ultraright environment.
Authorities have detained 117 individuals for carrying knives or threatening attacks, and conducted checks at 64,000 schools. Cybercrime investigators found no evidence of coordinated attacks or social media challenges fueling the violence.
