Phillies' Arraez Removed With Left Ankle Sprain

Phillies second baseman Luis Arraez was removed from Thursday night’s game against the Brewers with a left ankle sprain, the team announced. He was assisted off the field and could not bear weight on his left leg.

The injury occurred during a ground ball play, with Cooper Pratt fielding the ball and throwing wide to first, forcing Jake Bauers to move to catch it. Arraez attempted to sidestep Bauers but planted awkwardly and fell.

Arraez, who has been the everyday second baseman since joining the Phillies from the Giants, was replaced by Edmundo Sosa. The Phillies reconfigured their infield defense following the trade, moving Bryce Harper to the outfield and Bryson Stott to third base.

If Arraez is unable to play, the Phillies may revert to their Opening Day infield setup. Bryan De La Cruz and Derek Hill could see more time in the outfield, while Sosa may take over in the infield. Sosa played third base in the game, with Stott moving to second.

Meanwhile, left-hander Jesus Luzardo completed a 30-pitch bullpen session. Interim manager Don Mattingly stated that the next step would be facing live hitters. Luzardo has been sidelined since early September with left shoulder inflammation.

Luzardo, who pitched to a 2.97 ERA across 29 starts, expressed willingness to take any role needed. He said, 'Whatever role they need me, I’ll do. I just want to win.'
