The Brief

  • Clarkson accused a Brooklyn store of treating her like 'Pretty Woman' character Julia Roberts.
  • Store posted a deleted review claiming customers felt welcomed and treated kindly.
  • Art of Play, opened in 2024, sells games, puzzles, and home goods.

Kelly Clarkson criticized a Brooklyn novelty shop for how an employee treated her during a recent visit, comparing the experience to the 'Pretty Woman' movie scene. The singer took to Twitter to express her frustration, claiming she was disrespected and looked at as if she couldn’t afford the items.

Clarkson tweeted that she was 'looked at as if I couldn’t afford it' and was told an employee could find something comparable for her. She went on to accuse the store of treating her like Julia Roberts’ character, Vivian, in the 1990 film.

Art of Play posted a purported review on its Instagram story, which was later deleted, claiming customers felt welcomed and treated with kindness. The anonymous reviewer described the store as a place that 'leaves you smiling and wanting to come back.'

The store, which opened in Brooklyn Heights in 2024, is owned by identical twin founders Dan and Dave Buck, who transplanted the business from San Diego.

According to the store’s website, all ages are welcome, though the space is more geared toward adults. A partner of the store, Adam Rubin, told the Brooklyn Paper in 2024 that the goal was to 'create an antidote to the mindless scroll.'

A store employee could not immediately comment on Clarkson’s claims, and the owners were expected to issue a statement.
