The Brief

  • Sub-zero temperatures expected in Ulster, Connacht, and north Leinster.
  • Frost and dense fog likely overnight, with clear skies expected early Monday.
  • Daytime temperatures may reach 10C to 13C, but cold conditions persist into Tuesday.

Met Éireann has issued a warning about sub-zero temperatures in parts of Ireland as a wintery weather system moves in. Overnight lows could reach -1C in some areas, with frost and dense fog expected.

The national forecaster predicts a dry and bright day on Monday, with temperatures dropping sharply after sunset. Clear skies and light winds will create ideal conditions for frost to develop, especially inland and in northern regions.

Eastern and southern coastal areas are likely to experience milder conditions, with higher temperatures and more cloud cover. Motorists are being urged to remain cautious due to reduced visibility from fog, particularly during late-night and early-morning hours.

Monday is expected to transition from frost and fog to dry conditions and sunshine as the morning progresses. Daytime temperatures are forecast to range from 10C to 13C, with light to moderate breezes from the east or northeast.

The cold conditions are set to continue into Tuesday, with Met Éireann forecasting a chilly start accompanied by mist, fog, and frost. Fog is expected to be widespread in the north, midlands, and west, gradually clearing through the morning.

Tuesday will remain mostly dry with spells of sunshine, but occasional cloud from the east may bring light showers, particularly in eastern counties. Highest temperatures are expected to range from 9C to 12C, with some areas experiencing lower temperatures due to lingering fog.
