India criticizes Pakistan on rule of law at UN
India condemns Pakistan's stance on rule of law, citing military dominance and human rights issues.
The Brief
- India accused Pakistan of undermining judicial independence and violating human rights.
- India criticized Pakistan's 26th Constitutional Amendment as a threat to judicial independence.
- India condemned Pakistan's treatment of former PM Imran Khan and restrictions on political competition.
India criticized Pakistan during a UN General Assembly session for its stance on the rule of law, arguing that a country where the military holds significant power cannot lecture others on the subject.
Counsellor R. Mythili of India's Permanent Mission to the UN stated that Pakistan's record on the rule of law is 'a mockery' of its own claims, citing the country's military dominance and restrictions on judicial independence.
Mythili highlighted Pakistan's 26th Constitutional Amendment, which she described as a 'real blow' to judicial independence, and noted its impact on the structure and functioning of Pakistan's judicial system.
India also criticized Pakistan for the imprisonment of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, stating that the situation reflects a 'mockery of the rule of law' due to the arbitrary detention and denial of medical treatment.
Mythili further accused Pakistan of preventing a popular party from contesting elections, sentencing civilians through military courts, and muzzling Supreme Court judges, all of which she claimed violate human rights.
In addition, she rejected Pakistan's allegations against India regarding minority rights and press freedom, calling them a 'tactical diversion' from Pakistan's own conduct towards minorities.
