The Brief

  • Ilhan Omar received 76% of the vote, defeating John Nagel with 16%.
  • Omar faces scrutiny over past legal issues and family ties to Somalia.
  • New evidence suggests her marriage to her brother was part of an immigration scam.

Ilhan Omar, a Minnesota congresswoman, was reelected on Tuesday with 76% of the vote, securing 262,702 votes compared to her Republican opponent John Nagel, who received 16% of the vote and 55,875 votes.

The election comes amid ongoing scrutiny of Omar’s past legal issues, including newly uncovered evidence suggesting her marriage to her brother was part of an immigration scam.

Photographs of Omar’s family, recently made public, provide further evidence that she married her brother, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, as part of an immigration scheme.

In 2009, Omar married Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, who is the son of her father Nur Said. In most Muslim countries, a person’s surname is the father’s name, implying that Ahmed is her brother.

Omar deleted a tweet linking to a now-deleted Instagram post in which she referred to her father as Nur Said. This post was resurfaced by media outlets, prompting her to remove it.

Her sister Sahra Noor tweeted about their family, including a photo of a family reunion with several men and Leila Nur Said Elmi, suggesting a complex family structure.

A Facebook post from 2016 mentioned a dinner with Omar and her sister Leila Elmi, adding to the evidence of a family network that may have been used to secure asylum.

Journalist David Steinberg obtained Leila Elmi’s marriage certificate, which lists Nur Said as her father, further linking the family to Omar’s past.

In 2017, Omar swore under penalty of perjury that she had not seen her husband, Ahmed N. Elmi, since 2011 and did not know any of his relatives.

A report by Steinberg revealed that in 1995, Ilhan entered the United States as a fraudulent member of the ‘Omar’ family, which was granted asylum. Her genetic family split at that time, with some members receiving asylum in the UK.

Omar’s father, Nur Omar Mohamed, is connected to former Somali dictator Said Barre, raising questions about his legal status in the United States.

Omar’s legal troubles continue to raise questions about her ability to represent Minnesota and whether she will face consequences for her past actions.
