The Brief

  • IEC confirms vote counting is ongoing with results being verified.
  • ANC leads in national count with DA close behind.
  • Local party leaders lead in specific provinces.

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has called for calm and patience as vote counting and verification continue following Wednesday's local government elections.

IEC Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo confirmed that ballots are being counted at voting stations, with results captured, transmitted, and verified to ensure accuracy.

Political party agents, independent candidates, and accredited observers are overseeing the transparent process. Mamabolo urged parties and supporters to avoid circulating unverified information.

Early results show the ruling African National Congress (ANC) slightly ahead of the Democratic Alliance (DA). With about 33% of votes counted, the ANC holds roughly 32% to the DA’s 28%.

The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party is leading in KwaZulu-Natal, while the DA leads in Gauteng and the Western Cape. These local elections are crucial, as municipal council compositions will determine local governance, with coalition talks likely where no outright majority emerges.

The IEC expects to finalize results soon.
