Greece Imposes 10% Crypto Capital Gains Tax Starting 2027
Greece's parliament approved a 10% tax on crypto profits, effective January 1, 2027.
The Brief
- A 10% tax on crypto sale profits will take effect on January 1, 2027.
- Investors with annual gains under 500 euros are exempt from the tax.
- Staking, lending, and liquidity income will be taxed at 15%.
Greece's Hellenic Parliament approved a new framework for taxing cryptocurrency profits, setting a 10% capital gains tax on gains from crypto asset sales. The rules will apply starting on January 1, 2027.
The legislation, part of a broader financial oversight bill, also outlines tax treatment for staking, crypto lending, and liquidity provision, applying a 15% tax rate to these activities.
Investors whose annual crypto gains do not exceed 500 euros will be exempt from the 10% tax. The law also specifies that using crypto to purchase goods or services may trigger capital gains tax, while swapping one crypto asset for another is not considered a taxable event.
A voluntary declaration window allows investors to report previously unreported crypto gains within 12 months. Any resulting tax must be paid within 60 days of filing to avoid penalties and interest.
The tax initiative was first proposed by Greece's Ministry of National Economy and Finance in October. With parliamentary approval, the focus now shifts to how the rules will be implemented, including documentation requirements and classification of different crypto transactions.
Market participants are advised to monitor how tax filings will be structured for staking, lending, and liquidity activities, as well as how authorities will define and handle various transaction types under the new framework.
