Georgia probes tabulation delay in key House race
Seminole County's late upload of 388 votes altered outcome of state House race.
The Brief
- Georgia Secretary of State launched an investigation into a tabulation delay.
- Missing votes uploaded late, flipping the result of a state House race.
- Democrats now hold a slim majority in the state House for the first time in 22 years.
Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger opened an investigation after discovering a tabulation delay in Seminole County. The delay involved the late upload of 388 votes that changed the outcome of a state House race.
The discrepancy was identified during a routine post-election review. Seminole County officials found that a memory card containing the missing votes had not been uploaded to the state system.
The late upload shifted the result of the District 154 race from Democratic candidate Harry James to Republican incumbent Rep. Gerald Greene. Greene now leads by 262 votes after the missing votes were added.
County election officials have until Monday to certify the election. Raffensperger’s office is examining how the tabulation error occurred and whether changes are needed to prevent similar issues.
The Democrats’ narrow victory in Georgia marks the first time in 22 years they hold a majority in the state House. This shift significantly reduces the GOP’s control over the state legislature.
Raffensperger emphasized the importance of every vote, noting that even a small number of unreported ballots can alter the outcome of a close race.
