The Brief

  • French trade unions and student groups plan protests on Saturday.
  • Yellow Vests movement holds separate rally despite ban.
  • Interior minister announces deployment of 70,000 security personnel.

French trade unions and student groups are organizing another day of protests across the country on Saturday. The Yellow Vests movement plans a separate rally in central Paris, despite a ban by authorities.

The protests follow weeks of youth-led unrest and nationwide strikes over the rising cost of living and public services. They come less than six months before France elects a new president to replace centrist leader Emmanuel Macron, who cannot seek another term.

Interior minister Laurent Nunez announced that 70,000 police officers and security personnel will be deployed across France. He stated that authorities will be ready to respond to any rioters or looters.

The Yellow Vests movement, which staged protests eight years ago against planned fuel-tax hikes, has called for a banned rally. Benjamin Ball, a member of the movement's coordinating committee, said the group is calling for 'mass disobedience.'

Recent demonstrations have been largely peaceful, although clashes with police and vandalism have occurred. France experienced its worst rioting in years on October 17, leading to curfews, bans on large gatherings, and restricted protest routes.

Unions are demanding an increase in the minimum wage, which has not been raised since 2012, along with tax reforms and better conditions for young people. The government is under pressure to address these demands while managing public debt.
