The Brief

  • Rob Cerfolio promoted to general manager following two years as assistant GM.
  • Cerfolio previously worked as director of player development for the Guardians.
  • Randy Flores, another assistant GM, was named Astros' general manager.

The St. Louis Cardinals have officially promoted Rob Cerfolio to general manager, effective immediately. The move comes after two seasons in his role as assistant general manager.

Cerfolio, 34, joined the Cardinals two offseasons ago and was previously the Guardians’ director of player development. He was given the title of assistant general manager with a focus on player development and performance.

Cerfolio’s promotion follows his consideration as a candidate for the Athletics’ general manager position. He interviewed alongside other known candidates, including Matt Kleine and Taylor Smith, who was ultimately hired by the A’s.

The Cardinals also lost Randy Flores, their assistant GM and scouting director, who was named general manager of the Astros last week. Flores had been one of three assistant GMs alongside Cerfolio and Moisés Rodríguez.

The promotion of Cer,folio is seen as a way to maintain continuity as the Cardinals’ baseball operations leaders have attracted interest from other teams. The team may promote another internal candidate or bring in an external hire in the coming months.

It is expected that Cerfolio’s promotion comes with a new contract, though details have not been disclosed. Bloom’s contract as president of baseball operations covers the 2026-30 seasons, suggesting Cerfolio may look at a similar timeline for his role.
