Chinese President Xi Jinping urged the Middle East and Gulf region to avoid becoming a battleground for great-power rivalry during a meeting with Oman's sultan, Haitham bin Tariq al-Said.

Xi emphasized the need for joint efforts to ensure peace and stability in the region, according to China's Foreign Ministry. He also stated China is committed to contributing solutions to regional security challenges.

China's Foreign Ministry announced plans to dispatch special envoys to the Middle East soon to promote engagement and de-escalation efforts. The move follows increased Chinese involvement in regional diplomacy amid tensions involving the US and Israel.

Haitham, who visited Beijing for the first time since diplomatic ties were established in 1978, expressed appreciation for China's positions on regional issues. He also mentioned Oman's openness to a preferential trade and investment agreement with China.

Oman, China's largest trade partner, has seen increased tourism and business ties since direct flights between Beijing and Muscat began in November. The country also seeks to expand its renewable energy and digital commerce sectors.

During the visit, Haitham highlighted cooperation between financial institutions and investment sectors, noting his arrival in Beijing was welcomed by People's Bank of China Governor Pan Gongsheng.
