Wegmans Confirms UWS Store Despite Two Years of Uncertainty
Wegmans has finalized plans to open a Manhattan store on the Upper West Side after two years of speculation.
The Brief
- Wegmans will occupy 1932 Broadway between West 64th and 65th streets.
- The site previously housed Bed Bath & Beyond, which closed in early 2023.
- An official opening date has not been announced.
Wegmans has confirmed it will open a store on the Upper West Side, according to a spokesperson speaking to West Side Rag. The location is at 1932 Broadway, between West 64th and 65th streets.
The site was previously occupied by Bed Bath & Beyond, which closed in early 2023 amid companywide store reductions and bankruptcy proceedings. Wegmans began displaying signs in June 2024, but the storefront remained vacant.
Company spokesperson Mandee Puleo confirmed that Wegmans is currently designing the store layout and obtaining necessary permits. While an official opening date has not been set, the store’s construction is confirmed.
This will be Wegmans’ second Manhattan store, following its 87,000-square-foot location at 770 Broadway in Astor Place, which opened in 2023. The UWS site was initially a focus of negotiations, but the process stalled, leading to the Astor Place store’s development.
Puleo was asked directly if the UWS store would open, to which she reportedly responded that the store is expected to open, though no timeline was provided. Local residents, however, remain skeptical about the store’s actual opening.
Some residents have expressed concerns about the potential impact of the store on traffic and neighborhood congestion. Others have questioned the reliability of the timeline, with some predicting the store may not open until 2030.
