The Brief

  • Google announced a new system status bar for Wear OS apps in a later platform release.
  • A Wear OS 7.1 canary emulator was released for developer testing of the feature.
  • The status bar will show time and system indicators, similar to Android.

Google has confirmed that a later version of Wear OS will introduce a persistent system status bar over app windows. This bar will appear at the top of the circular display and will show the current time and system status indicators.

On October 26, Google released a Wear OS canary emulator for Android Studio, allowing developers to test upcoming features and UI changes before they are available on physical devices.

The system status bar will use standardized clock typography, placement, and backplate across the platform and different apps. Apps requiring a fullscreen experience can hide the status bar.

As of the current preview, the status bar displays a placeholder star icon instead of the final system status indicators. Developers are encouraged to provide feedback through early testing.

The canary emulator is based on Wear OS 7.1 (API level 37.2-beta1, Android 17 'CinnamonBun') with build ID CP41.260831.001.E8. However, the system status bar is included only in this emulator for testing and will not be part of the upcoming Wear OS 7.1 stable release.

Automatic coordination in Jetpack Compose for Wear OS will ensure apps targeting API level 35 or higher and using Compose version 1.8.0-alpha02 or higher will automatically opt into the system status bar.
