US Midterms Impact Global Affairs, Including Australia
Australians should pay attention to US midterm elections despite Trump not being on the ballot.
The Brief
- Midterms determine control of Congress, which influences US spending and policy.
- Over 39 governorships and numerous local elections are also on the ballot.
- Democrats are expected to gain control of the House and Senate.
Millions of Americans will vote in the midterm elections on Tuesday, with the world's most famous politician not appearing on the ballot. Despite this, the outcome has global implications, including for Australia.
The majority of US political power lies with 535 members of Congress, most of whom are up for election. These individuals have the authority to shape US spending, limit presidential actions, and even remove the president from office.
All 435 House members are up for re-election, while about a third of senators are also on the ballot. Additionally, 39 governorships, including those in California, Texas, New York, and Florida, will be decided by voters.
Beyond major offices, voters will also elect judges, local officials, and other positions. Some of these roles require fewer votes to win, as voters often overlook them on ballots.
Democrats are heavily favored to take control of the House and gain a Senate majority. This shift could halt Trump's legislative agenda, block his policies, and potentially initiate impeachment proceedings.
If Democrats win, they could also prevent Trump from making more judicial appointments, including a Supreme Court seat, which would limit his legacy. They may also block his ability to impose tariffs, benefiting Australian exporters.
