US military claims vessel breached Iran naval blockade and was disabled by fighter jet strike.
The Brief
- US fighter jet struck Panama-flagged cargo ship in Gulf of Oman.
- Vessel allegedly attempted to breach US naval blockade against Iran.
- CENTCOM reported four ships disabled and 135 turned back in three months.
The United States military stated on Saturday that a Panama-flagged commercial cargo vessel was disabled in the Gulf of Oman after allegedly ignoring warnings and attempting to breach a naval blockade against Iran.
According to CENTCOM, the bulk carrier attempted to transit regional waters after departing from an Iranian port, prompting enforcement of the US naval blockade.
The Central Command explained that enforcement of the blockade involves issuing direct warnings and operational orders to commercial shipping, with naval units redirecting compliant vessels and disabling those that refuse to follow instructions.
CENTCOM reported that four commercial vessels had been disabled and 135 ships turned back over three months of operations, alongside the destruction of 10 tankers linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' shadow shipping network.
The command urged regional mariners to heed all blockade directives and advised ship crews to monitor Notice to Mariners broadcasts and maintain communication with US naval personnel via radio channel 16 when navigating the Gulf of Oman and approaches to the Strait of Hormuz.
