Hurricane Simon, with winds of 155 mph, is approaching the Pacific coast of Mexico, with the eye of the storm just off the coast early Sunday.
The National Hurricane Center warned that the storm could bring 10 to 20 inches of rain over parts of southwestern Mexico, with some areas receiving up to 30 inches.
Jalisco state officials suspended classes in 22 coastal municipalities and initiated evacuations from at-risk areas, also urging the tourism sector to secure workers and visitors in shelters.
Residents in Puerto Vallarta are preparing for the storm, with businesses boarding up windows and few people walking the streets under overcast skies.
Local resident Jesús Gómez expressed hope that the storm would not affect the area, stating that businesses would continue operations unless ordered to close by Civil Protection officials.
The hurricane center also issued warnings about a dangerous storm surge and large waves along the immediate coast near the projected landfall zone.
