Brazilian president's team claims social media platforms restricted content ahead of runoff.
The Brief
- Lula's campaign alleges Meta blocked content and limited reach on its platforms.
- Brazilian electoral court orders Meta to explain alleged irregularities.
- Meta denies the claims, calling them false and unsupported.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's campaign accused Meta of election interference on October 11, 2026, following allegations that his social media content was restricted on the company's platforms.
The campaign reported that Meta's platforms, including Instagram, prevented Lula's profile from promoting posts and interrupted the reach of his official account's content.
Lula's team also claimed that the profiles of Lula and other leftist leaders disappeared from Instagram's search function before the first round of voting on October 4.
The Superior Electoral Court ordered Meta to clarify whether it reduced the reach of L. Lula's campaign posts and to explain the reported anomalies within 48 hours.
Meta's Brazil office rejected the allegations, calling them 'simply false' and 'not supported by the facts.' The company stated that many technical issues were not limited to Brazil or specific accounts.
Lula's campaign has filed a complaint with the electoral court over the alleged social media restrictions, which came as the president prepared a social media push following the first round of voting.
