US Expats Face Unique Financial Challenges in Spain
Financial planner Peter Dougherty outlines obstacles Americans face when managing investments in Spain.
The Brief
- U.S. tax rules complicate investing in Spain, favoring individual stocks and bonds over mutual funds.
- Modern portfolio theory may misinterpret volatility as risk, according to Dougherty.
- Dougherty founded USpain Financial Consultancy to address these challenges.
Peter Dougherty, a financial planner, describes the difficulties Americans encounter when investing in Spain. He explains that U.S. tax rules continue to apply to American citizens, regardless of where they reside. These rules, he says, penalize investments in mutual funds or ETFs managed in Spain.
As a result, Dougherty notes that Americans in Spain often face higher costs and reduced diversification when investing locally. He suggests that it may be more practical for them to keep their investments in the U.S. rather than transfer assets to Spain.
Dougherty also critiques modern portfolio theory for equating volatility with risk. He argues that for many clients, risk is better defined as not having what is needed when it is needed, such as funds for children’s education.
To align financial planning with client goals, Dougherty promotes 'goal-based' planning. He explains that this approach provides both the advisor and client with a shared standard for measuring success.
Four years ago, Dougherty joined Bissan Wealth Management, the only Spanish firm that integrates financial planning with investment strategies using goal-based planning. He recently left the firm to start USpain Financial Consultancy.
Dougherty emphasizes that geography and portfolio structure do not have to align. He acknowledges that while it may be ideal for Americans moving to Spain to bring their financial assets with them, economic factors such as tax rules and currency fluctuations may make this impractical.
