Uruguayan Parish Prepares for Pope's Visit Amid Violence
A Catholic parish in Montevideo's Borro neighborhood, plagued by violence, will host Pope Leo XIII during his South American tour.
The Brief
- Pope Leo XIII will visit Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Borro, a neighborhood with high homicide rates.
- The parish provides shelter, job training, and support for addicts amid ongoing violence.
- Residents face daily threats from drug-related violence and gunfire.
The Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Borro, a neighborhood in Montevideo, is preparing for Pope Leo XIII’s visit, which will take place during his Nov. 6-17 tour of Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru. The neighborhood has been severely impacted by drug trafficking and violence.
Officials reported that more than 46% of the 98 homicides in Montevideo up to September occurred in Borro and surrounding areas, despite Uruguay’s overall low homicide rate. The government has deployed armored vehicles for patrols to address the issue.
The parish, which builds homes, promotes job creation, and supports addicts in their recovery, has become a critical refuge for residents. Rev. Pablo Coimbra, the parish’s head, said families often seek shelter inside the church during gunfire outbreaks, as stray bullets can strike anyone.
The church is also leading social housing projects, with residents constructing over 100 units featuring sanitation systems. This initiative creates local employment and offers an alternative to a life of crime.
Young people, including Lautaro Martínez, a soccer player, have found solace in the parish. However, training has been suspended due to recent shootings. The church hosts Masses for homeless individuals, providing meals and a sense of community.
Pablo Acosta, a 28-year-old former drug user, now lives between shelters and the streets, working informally and sending money to his son. He said he has been trying to quit drugs for the past month after suffering gunshot and stab wounds.
