Prime Minister Andy Burnham has stated the UK will support an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine following Donald Trump's claim that an agreement had been reached.
Trump announced the ceasefire on social media, stating both sides had agreed to immediately halt attacks on each other's energy infrastructure, though he provided no further details.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed that he was unaware of the development but called it 'good news for everyone' and emphasized the importance of making it a reality.
Burnham noted that Russia had intensified strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure over the weekend, which he described as an attack on civilians, causing cold and darkness.
Burnham said he had discussed the energy ceasefire with Zelensky the previous day, adding that Ukraine is prepared to resume energy and fuel supply to global markets if Russia ceases its attacks.
Zelensky also mentioned that Russia had struck a power plant in Kyiv and energy facilities in Kharkiv after Trump's post about the ceasefire.
