Russian Strikes Wound Over 20 in Sumy as Germany Sends Aid to Kyiv
Ukrainian officials report multiple attacks across the country, including casualties in Sumy, as German Chancellor Merz arrives with new military and energy support.
The Brief
- Russian forces strike Kyiv’s Northern Bridge, injuring two, and bomb Sumy, wounding over 20.
- Germany provides €1.3 billion in aid, including military equipment and energy support.
- Ukraine reports over 2,000 Russian casualties in the past 24 hours.
Russian forces struck Kyiv’s Northern Bridge for the second consecutive day on October 4, injuring two people, one of whom was hospitalized. A damaged heating main in the Desnianskyi district temporarily cut off hot water. Overnight, drones damaged six private houses, a church, a primary school, a café, and a medical facility in the Boryspil district, with no casualties reported.
In Sumy Oblast, Russia conducted 45 attacks on 21 settlements in 14 communities. Five guided bombs hit Sumy and the Bezdrytsia community in the morning, and six more were dropped around 2 p.m. Drones hitting a Sumy enterprise killed a 52-year-old worker. Authorities reported more than 25 injured, 21 by aerial bombs, including a 1-year-old child.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv by train and held a joint press conference with President Zelensky. They announced a package worth over €1.3 billion, including €1 billion in military aid with funding for interceptor drones and about €350 million for energy. Germany will also supply thousands of IRIS-T missiles and additional IRIS-T fire units.
Ukraine’s General Staff reported that Russia lost 2,020 personnel in the previous 24 hours, bringing its total since February 2022 to about 1,542,720. Ukrainian losses were not disclosed, though the war’s toll on soldiers has strained Ukraine’s prosthetics providers. Overnight on October 4, the SBU hit a Su-35 and Su-34 at the Khanska military airfield in Russia’s Republic of Adygea, and drones of its Alpha special operations center struck an ammunition depot there.
Zelensky mentioned that the U.S. is proposing a technical-level trilateral meeting by the end of October. He said he spoke directly with the U.S. negotiating team on October 3 and that Ukraine is ready to participate. The visit came days after Ukrainians marked Pokrova, an observance that links Christian faith with military service.
