Two Sembcorp Marine Executives Acquitted in Brazil Corruption Case

Former executives found not guilty after prosecutors decided against prosecution.

Former Sembcorp Marine president and CEO Wong Weng Sun and former Jurong Shipyard senior general manager Lee Fook Kang were acquitted of all charges related to alleged corruption in Brazil.

The Attorney-General’s Chambers stated prosecutors decided to issue stern warnings to the two Singaporeans instead of proceeding with criminal charges, based on the case's facts and circumstances.

The warnings were administered by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau on September 21, leading to the application for discharges, which the court granted on Thursday.

Mr. Wong's lawyers confirmed there are no further court proceedings against him and that he has consistently denied any involvement in criminal activity.

The two men were charged in March 2024 with bribing Brazilian officials between 2009 and 2014, with around US$44 million allegedly paid through Mr. de Jesus, who acted as a middleman.

Mr. Wong and Mr. Lee each faced five charges of conspiring to give gratification to Mr. de Jesus for the benefit of Sembcorp Marine's subsidiaries in Brazil.
