The Brief

  • Trump claims energy ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia is in effect.
  • Zelensky states he was not informed of the ceasefire and denies its existence.
  • Ukraine reports continued Russian attacks on energy infrastructure despite ceasefire claim.

President Donald Trump announced on Sunday a new energy ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia, claiming both sides had agreed to the measure. The statement was posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, and was described as a 'shock' by Western allies.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told U.S. media that the ceasefire was 'news to me,' indicating he was not informed of the agreement. Zelensky said he would accept the ceasefire if it were in place, but expressed readiness only after being told when it would begin.

Zelensky, in a post on X, accused Russia of striking a power plant in Kyiv with a 'shahed' drone, causing power outages in several districts. He also reported attacks on energy facilities in the Kharkiv region, which he said occurred after Trump's ceasefire announcement.

The Ukrainian president said he had briefed Trump on the 'brutal Russian strikes that continue unabated.' He emphasized that the attacks happened despite the claimed ceasefire, raising questions about its validity and enforcement.

U.S. officials have considerable leverage over Ukraine, as the Trump administration could block weapons and funding. This has placed Zelensky in a difficult position, as any pause in energy attacks could indirectly protect a controversial U.S.-Russia diesel deal.

Recent reports suggest American diplomats are pressuring European allies to urge Ukraine to stop attacking Russian oil refineries. The U.S. has threatened to cut off intelligence sharing and the Purl mechanism for procuring weapons, though no action has been taken yet.
