Nelson was a key player for Ballyboden St Enda’s, leading the club to All-Ireland victory in 2016. He also played for the Dublin county team between 2011 and 2014, earning two Leinster medals and serving as a panel member for two Sam Maguire successes.
After retiring from playing, Nelson transitioned into coaching, working with Dublin’s underage teams and joining Jonny Cooper’s U20 football backroom team last season. He was first diagnosed with sarcoma in 2022, and the cancer spread to multiple organs by 2024.
Nelson’s funeral will begin with a lying-in-state at Massey Bros. Funeral Home in Goatstown on October 12, from 4pm to 6pm. His funeral mass will be held at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Ballyroan on October 13 at 10am, followed by burial at Laraghbryan Cemetery.
Dublin GAA has announced a minute's silence before the PTSB Dublin Senior 1 Football Final on October 18 at Parnell Park in honor of Nelson. Tributes have been shared by friends and family, describing him as a 'role model of a man' and a 'true gentleman.'
