Trump allows Bolsonaro to stay in US; Rubio plans meeting with Brazil's foreign minister
US and Brazil seek to ease diplomatic tensions after Bolsonaro's election loss.
The Brief
- Trump says Bolsonaro can remain in the US indefinitely.
- Rubio and Brazil's foreign minister plan to meet again in coming weeks.
- Bolsonaro's visa and diplomatic tensions remain a point of friction.
US President Donald Trump stated that Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro can remain in the United States 'as long as he wants.'
The remarks were made during a press briefing at Mar-a-Lago in Florida, where Trump also said he has no plans to meet Bolsonaro.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Brazil's Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira are set to meet again in the coming weeks, signaling potential diplomatic progress.
Rubio mentioned a brief conversation with Vieira at the G20 foreign ministers' meeting in Atlanta, with a follow-up meeting planned ahead of the G20 leaders' summit in Miami.
Bolsonaro, the son of former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, lost the October 25 presidential runoff to Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
The US granted Bolsonaro a visa after his defeat, which has raised diplomatic concerns between the two countries.
The Trump administration has not directly supported Bolsonaro's political ambitions, according to a US official and a person familiar with the matter.
The planned meeting between Rubio and Vieira comes amid ongoing tensions, including the revocation of Brazil's ambassador's visa in August and the approval of Bolsonaro's visa.
Brazil has also failed to approve Trump's nominee for ambassador to Brasilia, adding to the diplomatic strain.
A Brazilian official stated that the situation is not being politicized, as it has not been in other cases involving Brazilian citizens in the US.
