The Brief

  • Taiwan protests China's non-standard invitation for APEC summit participation.
  • China avoided using 'Chinese Taipei' designation, departing from established protocol.
  • Taiwan's ministry vows to defend its equal APEC membership rights.

Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the government had immediately lodged a strong protest with Beijing over what it describes as discriminatory treatment in its participation in the upcoming APEC summit in Shenzhen.

According to officials, China reportedly sent Taiwan a communication that fell short of a formal invitation and avoided using the 'Chinese Taipei' designation, which Taiwan traditionally uses in A,PEC.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that preparations for Taiwan's participation continue as per previous practices, with further details to be released when appropriate.

Officials maintained that Beijing must follow established procedures and conventions, similar to those observed during last year's summit in South Korea.

In 2001, Beijing sent an unsigned fax notification and refused to accept Taiwan's representative, prompting Taipei to boycott the gathering. In 2014, China arranged for an official to deliver the invitation in person.

China's claim over Taiwan is a complex issue rooted in historical, political, and legal arguments. Beijing asserts that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China, a viewpoint embedded in national policy and upheld by domestic laws and international statements.
