- Zoo Atlanta secured a loan of the pandas in 1999 after a 12-year campaign.
Giant pandas Ping Ping and Fu Shuang are set to make their public debut at Zoo Atlanta after a two-year absence. The pair will be introduced to visitors in a newly constructed habitat.
The pandas, both six years old, arrived in the United States six weeks ago via a FedEx transit plane and have been adjusting to their new environment.
Zoo Atlanta secured the loan of the pandas in 1999 following a 12-year campaign. The zoo committed $10 million over 10 years to China’s conservation efforts and built a $7 million habitat for the pandas.
China began gifting giant pandas to U.S. zoos in the 1970s, followed by short-term loans in the 1980s and longer-term rental agreements in the 1990s. Zoo Atlanta’s successful campaign led to the loan of Lun Lun and Yang Yang in 1999.
