The Brief

  • Rubio denied reports of Trump officials facilitating Bolsonaro's flight.
  • Bolsonaro fled Brazil after losing a key election to Lula da Silva.
  • Bolsonaro arrived in Miami after violating a court order to stay in Brazil.

State Secretary Marco Rubio denied on Saturday that the Trump administration had any role in the flight of Flavio Bolsonaro from Brazil to the United States.

Bolsonaro, who lost a crucial runoff election to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, fled the country days later.

The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal alleged that White House communications aide Jason Miller arranged a private jet for Bolsonaro's travel to Miami.

Rubio stated that the administration was not involved in any of the arrangements he made in terms of leaving and that the candidate had a valid visa.

Rubio added that President Donald Trump's only involvement was allowing Bolsonaro to enter the United States, as the president made clear that if he arrived at a port of entry, he would be paroled into the country, and he was.

Bolsonaro arrived in Miami on Wednesday after leaving Brazil despite a court order barring him from traveling abroad.

He is under investigation for money laundering and illegal foreign currency transactions and had been ordered by Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court to surrender his passports.
