Red Sox Starter Ends Season Strong with 1-0 Loss to Guardians

Ranger Suarez pitched five innings for the Red Sox on Thursday, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out five, in a 1-0 loss to the Guardians at Fenway Park.

Manager Chad Tracy praised the performance of Payton Tolle, Son, Gray and Suarez, who all pitched well during the three-game series against Cleveland.

Tolle, Gray and Suarez are set to be the Red Sox' three starters in the upcoming AL Wild Card Series, though Tracy has not disclosed their pitching order.

Suarez said he was told before the game he would not pitch more than five or six innings, and he finished the start efficiently, with strong performance in the later innings.

Suarez, who signed a five-year, $130 million contract with Boston in January, finished the season with an 8-5 record, 3.22 ERA and 148 ⅓ innings pitched.

He spent 20 days on the injured list in July due to a groin strain and had a rough start to the second half of the season, but finished strong with a 1.09 ERA in his final four starts.
