The Brief

  • Igor Shesterkin sidelined for the remainder of his 2026-27 campaign.
  • Trade rumors and free agency options are emerging.
  • Connor Hellebuyck, Jordan Binnington, and Alex Lyon are potential targets.

The New York Rangers have been forced to confront a significant goaltending challenge following Igor Shesterkin's season-ending injury. Officials confirmed that Shesterkin will miss the remainder of the 2026-27 campaign, leaving a critical gap in the team's lineup.

With Shesterkin out, the Rangers are exploring trade options and free agency to address their needs. Multiple sources have reported that discussions are ongoing regarding potential goaltenders who could fill the void.

Connor Hellebuyck of the Winnipeg Jets is among the most frequently mentioned names in trade rumors. However, officials have indicated that a move for Hellebuyck is unlikely, citing a mismatch in team fit.

Hellebuyck, currently suspended after failing to show up for training camp, posted a 2.86 goals-against average and an .895 save percentage during the 2025-26 campaign. This marks his 11th year in the NHL.

Jordan Binnington of the St. Louis Blues is also being considered as a possible trade target. While his contract may present financial challenges, officials suggest that Shesterkin's injury could create flexibility in the Rangers' cap space.

Binnington has a career 2.84 GAA and .903 save percentage, though his recent performance this season has been less impressive, with a 4.50 GAA and .847 save percentage in two games.

Alex Lyon of the Buffalo Sabres is another name in the mix, with reports suggesting the Rangers may prefer Lyon over other options due to his impending free agency. Lyon has a career 2.93 GAA and .903 save percentage.

The Rangers are currently riding a 4-2 overall record in the Metropolitan Division, trailing the Carolina Hurricanes in the standings. They are set to take on the Vancouver Canucks in a home game at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, Oct. 11.
