Philippines and Papua New Guinea are discussing a new labor cooperation agreement to enhance employment opportunities and support for workers in the maritime and fishing sectors.

Labor Secretary Francis Tolentino met with Papua New Guinea Ambassador Stephen Pokanis at the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) headquarters in Manila on Thursday, 29 October.

Tolentino stated that the new agreement should focus on skills development, labor market information, and green jobs, among other areas.

The proposed agreement will replace a previous labor arrangement between the two countries, which expired in 2024.

The renewed partnership will prioritize workers in the fishing sector, including those in informal employment, while creating additional opportunities for labor cooperation.

DOLE has been supporting maritime workers through its Maritime Labor Affairs Office, which offers legal assistance, dispute resolution, education, and employment services for Filipino seafarers.

The Trabahong Dagat Program provides fisherfolk with work experience, skills training, job placement assistance, and business support to address seasonal employment challenges and promote sustainable income sources.
