New Mexico Voters Head to Polls for Key Races
Tuesday's election features federal, state, and local races with early voting already underway.
The Brief
- Polls close at 7 p.m. local time, 9 p.m. ET.
- Ballot includes U.S. Senate, governor, and multiple state offices.
- Early voting accounted for 63% of 2022 governor votes.
New Mexico voters will cast ballots for federal, state, and local offices on Tuesday. Polls are scheduled to close at 7 p.m. local time, which corresponds to 9 p.m. Eastern Time.
The ballot includes races for U.S. Senate, governor, U.S. House, attorney general, secretary of state, and various state-level positions. Additionally, statewide ballot measures will be on the ballot.
In the 2022 midterm election for governor, approximately 712,000 votes were cast. Of those, about 63% were cast early or by absentee ballot, according to the latest data available.
Early and absentee votes are released by New Mexico’s 33 counties at varying times. About half of the counties are expected to release most of their mail and early in-person voting results in the first vote update of the night. In-person Election Day results are also included in some counties’ first updates, though most are released throughout the evening.
Vote counting typically progresses quickly. In the 2024 general election, the first results were reported shortly after polls closed. The state reached 50% of votes reporting at 10:33 p.m. ET and 90% at 12:48 a.m. ET on November 6.
The Associated Press will declare a winner only when it is determined that no scenario allows a trailing candidate to close the gap. If a race remains undecided, the AP will continue to report on developments such as candidate concessions or declarations of victory, while making it clear that no official winner has been declared.
